Teodor Petkov Trio

Teodor Petkov “Toto” is a distinguished Bulgarian pianist and composer renowned for his virtuosic technique and profound musicality. Leading a trio alongside bassist Vasil Hadzhigrudev and drummer Borislav Petrov, they draw inspiration from iconic 1950s jazz piano trios, echoing the styles of legends like Oscar Peterson, Erroll Garner, Phineas Newborn Jr. , and Nat King Cole. Together, the trio honours the timeless art of jazz with a modern sensibility, blending masterful technique, spontaneous interplay, and boundless creativity.

Teodor’s musical journey began at the age of three, evolving through classical training in Bulgaria, jazz studies in the music academy in Sofia and culminating in a master’s degree in creative music production in the United Kingdom. His debut album, Bake A Biscuit (2021), highlights his playful approach to jazz, delivering humor, swing, and a deep connection to the traditions of his piano heroes.

The trio’s dynamic performances are a testament to their shared passion for jazz and their commitment to the art of improvisation, offering audiences a captivating and authentic jazz experience.

Teodor Petkov Trio released “Bake A Biscuit” as a debut album in 2021. It contains compositions, dedicated to Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, Phineas Newborn, Milcho Leviev – all artists who shaped the instrumental and compositional aesthetics of Teodor Petkov.

Immediately after the release of the album, the trio was invited to play at festivals around Bulgaria such as March Music Days (Ruse), Sofia Jazz Days, Varna Jazz Days, Tryavna Art Festival.
